0 months - 3 months (Battle over latching on properly)
3 months - 6 months (Battle over bottle feeding)
6 months - 10 months (Battle over spoon feeding)
I already gave up trying bottle feeding when Ryan was 8 months. Yesterday I suddenly had the urge to try again. Reason: Ryan is drinking well on bottle for plain water. So i thought he might not be so against bottle now.
Ryan happily drank 50mls of EBM from the original 120mls. Not sure why so little... Perhaps because the teat size is of a newborn size.
Regarding battle over spoon feeding, Ryan has weird tastebuds... He can love the particular food for 1 week. Then if I try to reintroduce the same food 1 month later (variation purpose), he'll reject it totally.
I am already at a loss on what to feed. Everyone says he has to eat porridge. But nobody knows the story behind me not feeding Ryan with porridge.
Cooking baby porridge is totally different from adult porridge. Baby porridge has to taste great without any seasoning. Adult porridge can add all sorts of seasonings like soya sauce, pepper, etc...
Baby porridge has to look, smell, taste great. Recipe?
I add threadfin, carrot, broccoli into grinded brown rice and cook in claypot on gas stove for 1-2hours. End product? (Se Xiang Wei) all have! But picky Ryan only eats 1 mouth... And he'll totally seal up his mouth.
Either I have to swallow all his porridge, or I will start a soft then hard approach to force Ryan to swallow a few more mouths to make my effort worthwhile... I usually choose the latter.
Recently, I also am very tired of trying to cook for Ryan. Therefore I decided to try a rather unconventional way of feeding... I started Ryan on adult oats. (quaker brand - red packaging)
He likes it. He can eat about 2 teaspoons of oats (uncooked) which translate to about 1 small liquor shooter glass (totally cooked).
His favourite finger foods are:
- home baked bread
- cooked soft rice
- organic ruskits
- healthy times teething rusk
- healthy times teddy puffs
- gerber sweet potato stars
Dunno when he will proceed to eating real chinese foods like porridge... All I ask for is half a bowl of home cooked porridge.
boil ikan bilis first and use the stock to cook rice with the ingredients.. smells nice with a bit of taste..=)
ReplyDeleteikan bilis is too salty... by the time i rinse n soak and sun dry, tasteless already...
ReplyDeletei soak them before i take to boil so not so salty.. children must have some salt intake.. i rather use ikan bilis dan to add seasoning.. my mil always add seasoning to my girl's food.. make me headache.. or add pumpkin.. a bit of sweetness..
ReplyDeleteerm, i think i rem doc say absolutely no salt intake b4 1yr old... Ryan is 10months only. Needless to say totally no seasoning. Hehs, i dun allow other ppl to cook my son's porridge.
ReplyDeletePerhaps u can introduce one ingredient to add to the porridge at each time. In this way, he gets to feel the taste of the 'new food' and we get to know his reaction towards that particular food.
ReplyDeleteRather than cooking in claypot over the stove, can try slow cooker?
i'm already past the introducing 1 ingredient at a time for him... slow cooker portion too huge. so i dunno how to cook it. his portion is only max half the normal rice bowl.
ReplyDeletetake your time ba...can see that he's doing well
ReplyDeletei hope mine will be easy as time goes by
hey pet, have you tried cooking minced pork for ryan??
ReplyDeleteNormally i will cook ab t $2 worth of minced pork ( go mkt and get them to mince for you 3times through machine), then buy anothe $2 worth of (ba tou or chinese called rou tou). Wash them w boiling water, then put water to boil in the slow cooker, put in the meat once water is boiled.. can add in pumpkin, carrots. and then rice to cook porridege.. It smells super great!!! My ger luvs it.. and its so sweet w/o additional seasoning. She can finish 1 almost full bowl ( normal rice bowl) .Give it a try, maybe ryan will like it?
My ger has been taking threadfin for so long.. but i dun really like the smell , too fishy.. e minced pork porridge.. tastes super good, sometimes i also eat it.. haha.. n he can eat e minced pork cause it will be super soft..n small.
i tried that.. hehe. he only wanna drink e soup and not eat the ingredients. cause i tried 2x. once wif porridge, once w/o porridge. he drank everything on the 2nd time. i'll blog abt my recipe.. then u see what he drinks daily.
ReplyDeleteRyan got tooths le ma??
ReplyDeletehow close are your feeds to meal times? I cut down on my milk feeds both amt and frequency, and space the rest out so its not close to meal times. And I also cut down his night feeds. Then his day time appetite improved!
ReplyDeleteHow do u cut down the night feeds? I'm still trying hard leh..
ReplyDeleteThe books I read all agree that breastfed babies over 9months old dun need any more feeds at night, so I thought i'd increase his daytime milk+food, then cut out his night feeds. First i reduced the time he spends on my breast. If he only sucks for a few mins to sleep, then he doesn't need the feed. Those i cut out first by just holding/ rocking him to sleep. Then left those that he gets up like clockwork to feed, i fed him water instead (of course only 1 feed per time, not all night feeds) and after 2 nights when he realised he's not going to get any milk at that hour, he stopped crying for milk and slept thru those feeds as well. Hope this helps!
ReplyDeletei try giving shawn water at nite.. he open his eye wide n stare at me wo.. then next time.. he cry to latch.. i give bottle.. he refuse to open mouth le.. n make noise only..
ReplyDeleteduno how to stop him from cryin for milk at nite le..
but the battle sure will have some crying one, coz he's used to getting his milk already. Gotta be tough lor... someone gotta give in at the end....
ReplyDeleteand takes a few days of persistence, won't work overnight.
ReplyDeletelast nite i start again.. refuse to let him latch til slp.. he cry til so teary... so sad to c him like tat.. but i still didn give up... he slept after 30min cry & scream.. i give him 210ml fm b4 slp..
ReplyDeletebut he still wake up 3 time for the nite.. i give him water.. he drink le.. still make bit noise.. 1st & 2nd time i manage to make him slp with water only.. 3rd time.. @5am+ le.. he refuse to slp.. then i got to let him latch le... cant help liao...
Like tat is it i fail le... hai
nite feeds, ryan still drinking for comfort.. but he suck abit will go back to slp le. i think it's more of habitual.
ReplyDeletei tried to give him water. he suck abit, he push out and carried on whining. in the end i gave in.
yaya.. tats wat happening to shawn oso.. u dun intend to stop him from doing tat ah???
ReplyDeletei wan slowly stop bf him le.. so must start doing something to stop him le..
dun give up! It was like that at first for me also. But baby cannot forever like that until he go primary sch mah.
ReplyDeleteGive him a good full feed before bedtime- then u know he won't be hungry for a while. So let's say in your case, the first 2 times u give water when he wakes up (coz u certain he's not hungry, just waking up wanting to suck). Do this for a few nights in a row, he will realise that it's no use waking up at that time coz he's not going to get any milk, and he'll sooner or later stop waking at that hour.
Slowly cut out the night feed one by one- to replace all night feeds by water is too sudden and drastic, he not used to it, need to balance with increasing daytime food.
Will take time, to cut each feed will take a few nights and a few cries, be firm and can succeed!
thks thks.. but I dun think I can increase his daytime feeding le.. he is taking 1 rice bowl porridge for lunch n dinner each time..plus breakfast 5tbs cereal n 140ml milk.. then fruits puree for teabreak n 150ml milk b4 2.30pm nap… then 9pm I will give 170-210ml fm now… sometime 8pm I give baby biscuit …
ReplyDeletelike his feeding very pack le wo.. how to increase??
will keep trying.. n hope I can win the battle.. hehehe
wah ur baby can really eat! Im sure not hungry at nite like that liao! Good luck! =)
ReplyDeleteclaudia, yeah.. shawn is eating alot manz.
ReplyDeleterecently ryan isn't waking up at nite much. sometimes ard 4am, sometimes ard 6am for feeds... so i think i'll let him adjust by himself. for ur case, maybe u can try pancake's method..
