2nd Day of CNY

Family portraits taken @ Bt Panjang house...
This year we did not take family shots with Nai-nai. We'll probably try to persuade her to dress up just for 5mins for us to take the photo..

My First Try @ CNY Goodies

My mom suddenly had the urge to make pineapple tarts...  Therefore she came over to my place and we made some with pre-cooked pineapple paste from "BakeKing".

1st Attempt - 20th January 2009

2nd Attempt - 23rd January 2009

Do they look professional enough for sale? Or do they even look edible? Hehe

Ryan's Updates

Ryan is cruising like an expert nowadays... I'm trying to video his steps but he seem to love crawling better when the camera is on him. Haiz
But his crawling is very fast.. I think much faster than cruising. Ryan came up with a method to do speed crawling - (walk + crawl) at the same time.
On his fours, with 1 feet flat on the ground and 1 knee on the ground & 2 palms on the ground.

Ryan has begun climbing up and down of our house sofa.  Of course under supervision.  He always try to get out of our clutches by walking around the sofa, hoping we'll leave him alone, then he'll grab the sofa seat and push himself upwards with left knee up, then his butt and right knee up.

What an adventurer!

Ryan's Usual Menu

Oat Cereal

3 teaspoons of quick cook quaker oats
3 tablespoons of hot water
3 slices of banana

Fill a small bowl with hot water.  Leave it for about 1min to heat up the bowl.  Pour away the water.  Put the oats into the heated bowl.  Pour in 3 tablespoons of hot water and stir.  Add more hot water if necessary to thin the cereal.
Use a metal spoon to "mince" the cereal while it's cooking.
Stir in mashed banana just before serving.
Serve during breakfast for better "output" later in the day.

Corn Soup

10 corn seeds (plucked from fresh corn cob)
5 "gouqi"
1 red date (remove seed)
Half carrot (diced)
4 thin slices of "ba tou" (minced)
2 thin slices of "pao sheng"

Throw everything into a small claypot.  Pour in 2 bowls of water and bring to a boil.  Stirring constantly.
While boiling, use a pounder to get all e juice out of the ingredients.
Boil under low heat for about half an hour.
Switch off fire and cover pot until soup has cooled.
Pour soup into bowl over strainer, removing all ingredients.  Use back of a spoon to press the ingredients to ensure all juices are squeezed out.
Serve to baby during mealtimes.

Spinach Soup

About a bowl of leafy spinach (remove stems)
5 "gouqi"
1 bowl of water

Boil it in a small claypot.  Cover pot and boil under low heat for half hour.
Remove from heat.  Put leaves on a strainer and mash.  Try to mash till some spinach strains get into the soup.  Scrap the bottom of the strainer if the mash gets stuck.
Serve to baby during mealtimes.

Feeding Battle - Mother vs Son

Since Ryan's birth, we both have been battling...
0 months - 3 months (Battle over latching on properly)
3 months - 6 months (Battle over bottle feeding)
6 months - 10 months (Battle over spoon feeding)

I already gave up trying bottle feeding when Ryan was 8 months.  Yesterday I suddenly had the urge to try again.  Reason: Ryan is drinking well on bottle for plain water.  So i thought he might not be so against bottle now.
Ryan happily drank 50mls of EBM from the original 120mls.  Not sure why so little... Perhaps because the teat size is of a newborn size. Hehehe...

Regarding battle over spoon feeding, Ryan has weird tastebuds... He can love the particular food for 1 week.  Then if I try to reintroduce the same food 1 month later (variation purpose), he'll reject it totally.
I am already at a loss on what to feed.  Everyone says he has to eat porridge.  But nobody knows the story behind me not feeding Ryan with porridge.

Cooking baby porridge is totally different from adult porridge.  Baby porridge has to taste great without any seasoning.  Adult porridge can add all sorts of seasonings like soya sauce, pepper, etc...
Baby porridge has to look, smell, taste great.  Recipe?
I add threadfin, carrot, broccoli into grinded brown rice and cook in claypot on gas stove for 1-2hours.  End product?  (Se Xiang Wei) all have!  But picky Ryan only eats 1 mouth...  And he'll totally seal up his mouth.

Either I have to swallow all his porridge, or I will start a soft then hard approach to force Ryan to swallow a few more mouths to make my effort worthwhile...  I usually choose the latter.

Recently, I also am very tired of trying to cook for Ryan.  Therefore I decided to try a rather unconventional way of feeding... I started Ryan on adult oats. (quaker brand - red packaging)
He likes it.  He can eat about 2 teaspoons of oats (uncooked) which translate to about 1 small liquor shooter glass (totally cooked).

His favourite finger foods are:
- home baked bread
- cooked soft rice
- organic ruskits
- healthy times teething rusk
- healthy times teddy puffs
- gerber sweet potato stars

Dunno when he will proceed to eating real chinese foods like porridge...  All I ask for is half a bowl of home cooked porridge.

Ryan @ 10 months

Great News! Ryan can stand w/o support for about 10 secs now...  He's officially into cruising (depending on his mood).
He likes it when i hold his hand to walk around the house.  But he tires out easily.

Recently he has developed stranger anxiety...  Yesterday, I brought Ryan to my office as I needed to meet a client urgently.  My colleague carried him, he started to cry.  Aiyoh... Dunno since when Ryan started to be afraid of strangers...
He still like to fling himself over to any stranger who stretches out his/her hands.  But he's switch on his "tap" rather instantly the minute he sees that he's no longer in my arms.
So weird...

He still hates porridge... "Yeah, I know, he's 10months now, he should be on more solids" - blah blah...
But I can't help it if he seals up his mouth and pretend he can't see the spoon in front of him.  It doesn't help much when he will push the spoon away at every chance he has either.

I've started him on adult quaker oats.  He's taking about 2teaspoons daily.

On days I cook nutritious soup, I'll give Ryan soup & rice for dinner...  He takes no more than 2teaspoons of rice.  I'm consoled that he loves liquids, because he is more willing to drink the soup rather than eating solid rice.  At least the soup is nutritious.

He's more responsive on strollers recently.  When we go downstairs for breakfast during weekends, he's more willing to sit in the stroller while I eat my breakfast.  Of course, he'll expect me to feed him some of my food.  So I need to eat plain food like "chee kueh", "chee cheong fun".  So that I can share food with him. (sauceless, tasteless)

Clothes Testing @ OG Chinatown

Ryan is very uncooperative when it comes to wearing clothes. Not sure if other people experience the same problem as we do.
Daddy took some pictures of Ryan's unhappy face as we were testing out the sizes and colours that best suit Ryan's complexion & age.

Day Out @ Toa Payoh

Daddy & Mummy brought Ryan & Nai-Nai to HDB Hub. We needed to settle our housing issues which was long overdue.

Since we were there, we decided to do some window shopping... Ryan loves the tricycle. We might get it for him after CNY.

Derrick's ROM

The ROM was held in costa sands chalet... (So far!!)

We had late lunch @ Lerky Thai Restaurant in White Sands while waiting for Desmond to pick us up.
Daddy was busy teaching Ryan how to sign gong-xi gong-xi...

Xmas Gathering

Xmas eve - Mass @ Parish Church
Xmas day - Gathering @ Bt. Panjang Ah-Pek's house.
Boxing day - Open pressie day!

Dangerous Stunt

Today, I sat Ryan on the ikea highchair...  Before I buckle him, I thought of taking a sip of water which was on the table just a few steps away.

The minute I turned my head, Ryan has flung himself over.  Luckily his playpen was just beside him and the playpen is filled with pillows and quilt.  My heart almost stopped when Ryan did that stunt...

I can't imagine what would have happened if the playpen wasn't beside his highchair...
